Some quick notes first …

Arizona’s eight-week reign as the No. 1 team in the nation came to an end because of a 60-58 loss to Cal at Berkeley, Calif., on Feb. 1.

In the history of their No. 1 status, the Wildcats have only played one other payback game in this scenario. Arizona avenged a loss to Stanford and Mike Montgomery when it was ranked No. 1 in the 2002-03 season.

The Cardinal upset Luke Walton, Jason Gardner and Co., 82-77 on Jan. 30, 2003, at McKale Center. The Wildcats went from No. 1 to No. 2 after the loss. They regained the No. 1 ranking the following week because No. 1 Florida lost at Kentucky by 15 points.

In the rematch against the Cardinal at Palo Alto four weeks later, the Wildcats prevailed 72-69. Arizona clinched its 10th Pac-10 title in 20 years under Lute Olson in that game.

— Montgomery is 5-4 with a two-game winning streak against Arizona since becoming Cal’s coach in 2008-09. He is 2-2 in Tucson, including a 77-69 victory last year, as the Golden Bears’ coach. In the two losses at McKale Center, Arizona won by narrow scores of 76-72 in 2009-10 and 73-71 in 2010-11.

Montgomery was 9-9 against Arizona with Stanford from 1995-96 until he left for the Golden State Warriors after the 2003-04 season.

Before that, from when he started at Stanford in 1986-87 to the 1994-95 season, Montgomery was 1-17 against Olson and the Wildcats.
