Third-ranked Arizona (26-2) overtook Kansas for the No. 1 spot in the RPI rankings following the Jayhawks’ 72-65 loss at Oklahoma State last night. Kansas remains close at No. 2 despite seven losses (22-7).

The Wildcats are also atop the Pomeroy rankings followed by Virginia and Duke. Kansas is No. 8.

Jordin Mayes

Jordin Mayes

>> Senior guard Jordin Mayes should get the start tonight against Stanford in his last game at McKale Center. It will be the 17th start of his career, his first since his sophomore year in 2011-12.

The best game of Mayes’ career ironically was against Duquesne, T.J. McConnell’s former team, in the 2011-12 season. He scored a career-high 19 points, 16 of them in the second half, against the Dukes.

“He gets no sugar,” Arizona coach Sean Miller told reporters after that game. “He came here, no one asked me about him, he just did his job. Year 1 became Year 2, still no sugar, yet the guy does a good job and I’m glad we have him on our team.”

>> For only the second time since the Pac-10 formed in 1978-79 has at least nine teams won eight conference games. The only other time was in the 1990-91 season. If Oregon State (7-8) beats UCLA tonight or ASU or Arizona next week in Corvallis, the number will increase to a record 10 teams.

The Pac-12 has exhibited uncommon balance in the last years. A record nine teams had at least nine conference victories last season.
