This bracket takes an overall look at the best play in Arizona Wildcats history. The best play will be determined through a vote of readers. In case of a tie-breaker, yours truly will make a determination:

In a close battle, Salim Stoudamire’s game-winning jumper against Oklahoma State in the 2005 Sweet 16 game topped Derrick Williams’ no-look, winning three-point play against Texas in a Round of 32 game in the 2011 NCAA tournament. Stoudamire had 55.6 percent of the vote to Williams’ 44.4.

Stoudamire advances to the Elite Eight to face Craig McMillan’s “McShot” that defeated Oregon State at the buzzer in 1986.

The top half of the Elite Eight side of the bracket is set. The botton half will be finalized in the next three days. Please vote to help determine Arizona’s best play in the history of the program.

Why vote for Craig McMillan’s “McShot” at McKale Center against Oregon State in 1986:

Craig McMillan

Craig McMillan

Call it what you want — McClutch, McShot, McMiracle — the 1986 spectacular finish by Arizona against Oregon State and A.C. Green was so breathtaking it’s hard to put into words. In his sophomore season, McMillan made a last-second basket that beat the Beavers 63-62 in overtime on Jan. 23, 1986. With three seconds left, Steve Kerr threw a length-of-the-court pass on an out-of-bounds play that was deflected to McMillan and he swooped to the hoop to make the winning layup. Many fans in McKale stormed the court in celebration, in what was one of the rare times Arizona fans have reacted that way. “Some people were talking to me the other day about that play,” McMillan said during the 25th anniversary of Arizona’s 1987-88 Final Four team two years ago at McKale Center. “I didn’t do that much. The ball landed right in my lap.”

Why vote for Salim Stoudamire’s game-winning shot against Oklahoma State:

Salim Stoudamire

Salim Stoudamire

Stoudamire had his share of buzzer-beater or pressure-filled plays during his Arizona career. One of his most memorable was an off-balance jumper from the left side, over the outstretched arms of two defenders with 2.8 seconds left, giving Arizona a 79-78 victory over Oklahoma State in the 2005 Sweet Sixteen in Chicago. Stoudamire scored 10 of his 19 points in the final 4:35 of the game, in which the Wildcats shot 66 percent from the field (31-of-47). He was scoreless in the second half until six minutes remained.
