Arizona’s scheduling of a home-and-home series with Texas Tech of the Big 12 in 2019 and 2020 means the Wildcats are no longer the only Pac-12 team without a Power 5 conference opponent through 2020.

The two games against the Red Raiders, reviving an old rivalry from the Border Conference days, strengthens the Wildcats’ non-conference schedule that already has games against competitive programs BYU (2016 and 2018) and Houston (2017 and 2018) in the next five years.

Washington State and Utah now have the fewest games among Pac-12 schools scheduled against Power 5 conference opponents through 2020. The Cougars play at Rutgers and Utah hosts Michigan next season. That’s it for now for each program.

The most daring program is Sonny Dykes’ Cal Golden Bears, who have eight opponents from Power 5 conferences from 2015 to 2020. They have a home-and-home series scheduled with Texas, North Carolina and Ole Miss. They also have home-and-home arrangements starting in 2020 with TCU and Auburn.

USC and Stanford play Notre Dame each season in addition to three Power 5 conference opponents for USC (Texas twice and Alabama) and five for Stanford (Virginia twice and Northwestern three times) until 2020.

Arizona has five open non-conference spots from 2016 to 2020. With Texas Tech, BYU and Houston on the schedules, it’s unlikely another Power 5 opponent will be scheduled in that time frame. Arizona also has a home-and-home setup with UTEP in 2017 and 2018 and Hawaii in 2019 and 2020.

The Wildcats have a home-and-home arrangement in 2022 and 2023 with Mississippi State of the SEC.

Arizona and Texas Tech have met 32 times in football, with the last meeting in 1989. Texas Tech leads the overall series 26-4-2.

It once rivaled the rivalry with ASU as the most heated for Arizona through the WAC years, although the Red Raiders mostly had the upper hand.
