Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez was asked on Signing Day back in February if he planned to delve into the state of Hawaii for more recruits.
The state has a good history with Arizona football with former Wildcats who made it to the NFL, Stan Mataele and Makoa Freitas, as well as many successful others whose parents are from the islands. Arizona redshirt sophomore quarterback Anu Solomon is a Hawaii product who later moved to Las Vegas and attended high school there.
“That oughta be my primary area,” Rodriguez joked during the press conference. “I should tell (recruiting coordinator) Matt Dudek that I’ll take Hawaii. We still cover that area because it’s considered West Coast, but yeah, that would be a good one. We need to get more in Hawaii. There’s a lot of good football players up north and in the midwest, but nah, let’s go to Hawaii.”
And went to Hawaii, they did. Big time, literally.
Honolulu Kaiser High School four-star offensive guard Michael Eletise, the No. 1 ranked player at his position in the West and in the state of Hawaii by Scout.com, committed to Arizona on Monday night.
“He’s a tough, physical player with very good feet and is among the most athletic linemen in the nation,” Scout.com national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins writes.
Arizona’s offensive line coach Jim Michalzik and tight ends coach Charlie Ragle were mostly responsible for landing Eletise.
