Did fifth-year senior Jerrard Randall finally come of age against Washington State?
Look at Arizona’s last three possessions with Randall behind center in place of Anu Solomon:
Touchdown, 11 plays, 80 yards, 3:48 time of possession
Touchdown, 12 plays, 67 yards, 4:11 time of possession
Touchdown, 5 plays, 75 yards, 1:19 time of possession
Randall helped Arizona earn a helmet sticker with four drives of eight or more plays (indicating offensive rhythm), 10 plays of 12 or more yards (big-play capability) and 10-of-16 third- and fourth-down conversions (an Achilles’ heel of the Wildcats in the past).
Washington State, which has one of the most aggressive front sevens in the Pac-12, did not record a sack against Solomon or Randall.
With Arizona’s defense struggling because of injuries and inexperience — 25 different starters this season — the Wildcats’ best defense will be its offense and special teams going forward. The offense can’t afford lapses or else that puts the defense more at a disadvantage. The punting and kicking game can’t afford breakdowns because Arizona’s main chance to win games is by outscoring opponents.
An encouraging performance at Washington this Saturday can restore momentum for the Wildcats down the stretch.
