Last weekend, hundreds of junior high school wrestlers in Arizona, competed in the 2016 Arizona Junior High and Middle School State Championships at Tempe High School. It was the first chance for grapplers from Arizona to compete for a state title.
Six wrestlers with the Sunnyside Wrestling Club of Tucson placed among the top four positions in their weight class, and three of them won a title. The following is a recap of the weight divisions in which the Sunnyside wrestlers placed among the top four.
Gilbert Rodriguez of the Sunnyside Wrestling Club placed third with a major decision (10-0) win over Malaki Porter of Mogollon.
In the 88-pound bracket, Sunnyside’s James “Papi” Brown capped a dominant five-match run by winning the title with a 6-0 decision over Markell Rivera of Grindhouse.
Benjamin Alanis of Sunnyside rolled through the 93-pound competition winning his first three matches by fall in under 37 seconds and then capturing the title with a 2-0 decision over Rex McKrill of Show Low.
Alanis’ teammate Jesse Ybarra had a similar dominant run in his five matches toward a 98-pound championship, capped by a major decision (12-2) over Demian Gomez of the Arizona Grapplers. .
Brandon Moraga of Sunnyside placed third with a 4-3 decision over Christopher Kelly of Sunkist.
Clayson Goodwin of Willcox won his first three matches by fall before taking the 180-pound title by forfeit against Eugene Gonzalez of Sunnyside.
