Salpointe (9-3) will be playing for the Division I Sand Volleyball championship Saturday night against Xavier Prep (13-0). Xavier has only lost one match since the sport began in 2012 and the Gators have won all four state championships that have been held since then.

Salpointe lost to Xavier 4-1 on March 7. It was the first sanctioned match between the two schools. Salpointe ran a partial schedule last year and has now qualified for the state playoffs in the first year the program was eligible.

Ironwood Ridge (4-5) was not eligible for the post season this spring since the school only played nine matches instead of the required ten. Salpointe defeated Ironwood Ridge 4-1 on April 20.

The AIA was the first association in the nation to sanction sand volleyball as a sport and the Nighthawks hosted the first-ever duals competition in the nation this past March at the University of Arizona. The top Xavier pair of Macy Gordon and Cierra Flood won the Gold Bracket of the “CatBox Classic” while the third Salpointe pair consisting of Arica Christensen and Ariana Snyder won the Silver Bracket.
