10U Little League: Oro Valley beat Marana to force “If” game

Oro Valley (5-1) beat Marana 16-6 Wednesday night at Mehl Park to force an “If” game in the 9-10 District 5 championship series. Marana (3-1) beat Oro Valley 14-0 on Monday night to send the team to the Elimination Bracket where they knocked off Canyon View 10-5 on Tuesday night. Canyon View (4-2) finished in third place.

The final game will be played on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at Mehl Park. The winner will advance to the State Tournament on July 18 in Mesa.

Marana took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a 2-RBI double from Albert Broussard that scored Dillon Brown and Brayden Treat. Brown and Treat led off the game with back-to-back walks.

Oro Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Carlos Borras, a ground-out RBI from Ryan Madsen and an RBI single from Kayden Luke. Brody Jones hit a leadoff single and Cal Wixon followed with a walk.

Marana scored two more runs in the second to retake the lead 4-3 thanks to another 2-run double from Broussard. Treat and Rustin Allred had hits in the inning. Oro Valley came right back and plated six runs in their half of the inning with Jones coming up with a 3-run shot to right field. Noah Secrist led things off with a double and Luke had another RBI in the inning as did Bryce Weege.

Marana scored a run in the top of the third on an RBI double from Allred and another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Trevor Layton to score Sadie Silverstein but the team could not keep pace with Oro Valley. Oro Valley scored five runs in the bottom of the third to go up 14-5 and then two more in the bottom of the fifth to win the game 16-6. Jones, Wixon and Borras hit three doubles in a row to clinch the win and save Oro Valley from elimination.

Brown, Silverstein and Treat all saw pitching action for Marana while Ricardo Tovar and Blake Sholl pitched for Oro Valley.

Broussard went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI to lead Marana. Kameron Korth also went 3-3 with a triple and Allred went 2-2 with a double and an RBI. Treat and Silverstein picked up singles.

For Oro Valley, Jones went 3-4 with a home run, double and three RBI. Borras went 3-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Luke went 3-3 with three RBI. Jesse Williams had a 2-RBI single, Tovar had an RBI single, Secrist had a double and Weege and Madsen had RBIs.
