Douglas beat Sunnyside 12-9 Wednesday night to advance to the Championship Bracket of the Arizona State Junior Softball Tournament held at Arthur Pack. Douglas (2-0) beat the Mesa Mountain View Juniors 12-0 on Tuesday night and Sunnyside (1-1) beat Buckeye 19-0.

Douglas will play the winner of Flagstaff (2-0) and Queen Creek (1-0) in the first round of the Championship Bracket on Saturday. Sunnyside will take on Mesa Mountain View (1-1) on Friday night for a shot at the Championship Bracket. The loser will be eliminated.

Thornydale (0-1) is also in the tournament and the host team lost to Flagstaff 13-5 on Wednesday night. Thornydale will face Coolidge (1-1) Thursday night in an Elimination Game.

The Marana juniors received an automatic berth to the Western Regionals and the District 5 champions will begin action on Saturday, July 16 at Arthur Pack. The Western Regional typically includes teams from Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Montana, Washington and Arizona.

The State Intermediate Baseball Tournament will be held at Udall Park and it begins on Friday night. Sahuarita Copper Hills is scheduled to play against Marana Continental Ranch at 5 p.m. in the first round. Nogales will play the champions from District 1 (Flagstaff) at 7:30 p.m.

The State Junior Baseball Championship will start on July 16 at Jesse Owens Park.

Sunnyside took a 2-0 lead on Douglas in the top of the first inning on a couple of RBIs from Reanna Galvez but Douglas responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. Janae Aleman led the way with a 2-RBI single.

The score remained 5-2 until Douglas added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with Shainah Nerio picking up an RBI double. Down 7-2 Sunnyside scored three runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from Marina Gomez and Galvez.

Aleman put Douglas up 8-5 on a solo blast in the bottom of the fifth and then the team added three unearned runs to go up 11-5. Sunnyside scored four runs in the sixth to cut the score down to 11-9 with Lizette Deatherage hitting a 2-RBI triple.

Douglas tacked on another run in the sixth for the 12-9 win. Alondra Lugo went the distance for Douglas and she collected nine strikeouts. Gomez started the game for Sunnyside and Paola Zamacona took the circle in the second inning.

For Sunnyside, Rachelle Romero went 2-for-5; Deatherage had a triple; Zamacoma went 2-4; Gomez went 3-3 with a sacrifice; Galvez went 2-3 with a sacrifice; Ivy Nuñez had a single and Arianna Lopez went 2-4.

Aleman went 3-4 to lead Douglas including a home run and a double; Isabel Tanabe had a single; Yunise Murgia had a single; Nerio went 3-4 with two doubles; Renee Urea had a single and Aylin Hernandez went 2-4 with a double.
