AAU TEAM: Southern Stampede
OVERALL CLASS OF 2017 RANKING:
Scout: No. 10 (No. 2 point guard)
Rivals: No. 12 (No. 2)
247Sports: No. 19 (No. 2)
ESPN: No. 26 (No. 8 shooting guard)
OTHER TOP CHALLENGERS FOR SEXTON: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia Tech (coached by Josh Pastner), Iowa State, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
SCOUTING REPORT: From Scout.com — At 6-foot-2, Sexton has impressive physical features for a lead guard. He’s solidly built, with a lengthy set of arms. Sexton is extremely quick and has an explosive first step. He’s also an impressive all around athlete. Sexton stays in attack mode and is more of a new age, scoring lead guard than a true point. His quickness and nifty ball handling allow him to create space from defenders with ease. His shot looks goods and he has deep range. He’s comfortable scoring off the bounce and can do it from all three levels, as he’s also equipped with floaters, mid-range pull-ups and can score it through contact at the basket. Sexton also likes to play fast, push the tempo and is tough to contain because of his speed, strength and athletic ability. Defensively, Sexton has quite a bit of potential, as he’s laterally quick, has good instincts and is long, like mentioned above. Overall, Sexton is tracking as a high major prospect.
HOW HE FIGURES IN AT ARIZONA: A versatile five-star perimeter talent, Sexton can play either the point guard or shooting guard positions. He is rated relatively high as a point guard by Scout and Rivals while ESPN lists him as a shooting guard. In terms of shooting guards in 2017-18, Arizona may have to replace Allonzo Trier (if he goes to the NBA). Rawle Alkins will be a sophomore and UNC Asheville transfer Dylan Smith will be eligible after sitting out the upcoming season. Sexton’s ability to play both guard positions will give Sean Miller more depth and Sexton more playing opportunities, but the young guard must adapt to sharing minutes. Incoming freshman recruit Kobi Simmons is a fellow Georgia product with a similar skill set as Sexton.
BACKGROUND: Sexton has informed various recruiting services that he wants to officially visit Arizona’s campus. Miller personally offered Sexton a scholarship in April after watching him play at the Nike EYBL event in Indianapolis. He had games of 37, 29, 17, and 36 points in his four games in Indianapolis. He got to the foul line no less than eight times in each game, exhibiting his aggressive style. As great as he is scoring, coaches reportedly are as impressed with his defense. He averaged 17.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists off the bench to win MVP of the U17 World Championships in Spain earlier this month. Arizona’s 1997 Final Four MVP Miles Simon was an assistant coach of that team. Sexton is standing next to him in the photo Simon tweeted (below).
