AAU TEAM: Houston Hoops

OVERALL CLASS OF 2017 RANKING:

Scout: No. 15 (No. 2 power forward)

Rivals: No. 13 (No. 4 power forward)

247Sports: No. 14 (No. 4 small forward)

ESPN: No. 20 (No. 5 power forward)

OTHER TOP CHALLENGERS FOR VANDERBILT: ASU, Baylor, Oregon, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas, Texas A&M and TCU.

SCOUTING REPORT: From Scout.com — A face-up forward, Vanderbilt’s biggest strength lies in his motor and ability to go to the glass and reel in rebounds. He’s an impressive athlete that gets off the ground quickly and has good instincts when it comes to going after loose balls or rebounds. He demonstrates good skill and takes defensive boards and looks to start the break. He’s also a very good passer. The next step in his development is gaining consistency with his jump shot. … Vanderbilt is nursing a stress fracture in his right foot that will keep him out of action during the evaluation period this month.

HOW HE FIGURES IN AT ARIZONA: Another combo forward, Vanderbilt can shore up Arizona’s need for additional talent the power forward and, on occasion, small forward positions. Scout, Rivals and ESPN list Vanderbilt a power forward, but 247Sports has him as a wing player. He has the versatility Arizona needs at both positions to complement the post players and perimeter talent Sean Miller should possess in 2017-18. A tenacious defender and rebounder, he will fit right in with Miller’s mindset of putting hustle before all else.

BACKGROUND: Vanderbilt unofficially visited Arizona’s campus last October for the Red-Blue Game. He has also done the same at ASU, Iowa State, Kentucky and TCU (where his first cousin, Corey Barker, was recently hired as an assistant by new coach Jamie Dixon). His former AAU teammate De’Aaron Fox, a former Arizona target, was recruited to Kentucky. Vanderbilt comes from great basketball genes: His mother Gwen played at Xavier of Louisiana and his father Robert at Wiley College. His father also coached at the collegiate level and is now assisting where his son plays in high school. Scouting services indicate that in addition to Vanderbilt’s strength and versatility, he has a high basketball IQ.
