Here we go. In just 38 days, the University of Arizona will take on BYU on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. We will be honoring and listing 50 of the greatest high school football players from the state of Arizona (not just Southern Arizona) who went on to play for the Wildcats until kickoff.

This list honors high school achievements only. Some went on to have great careers with Arizona and in the pros but many did not. Some still hold Arizona high school records like our first honoree, Ted Bland.

This list is not a countdown from No. 50 to No. 1. That would be a nearly impossible task. Again, it’s not a list of the 50 greatest players with the greatest impact at Arizona. That list is for another day.

Day 38: Bob Crum, Sunnyslope (1969): Arizona (1973)

At 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds, Sunnyslope standout Bob Crum was a basketball star and a football standout. He went on to follow his father, Hilliard “Moose” Crum and played football for Arizona. By the time he was finished, Crum was named to the WAC 15-year All-Star Team.

His father, “Moose,” played football (1946-47) and basketball (1946-49) for Arizona. His son, Conan played football at Arizona. His daughter Cassidy played volleyball for Arizona. Another daughter, Mariko, played volleyball at Long Beach State. Still, another daughter, Chevon, played volleyball for Pepperdine. Finally, his other son, Dax, was a quarterback for Wyoming.

Bob Crum was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973.
