WOMENS HOOPS: Southern Arizona talent from junior college to NCAA Division I

Sydni Stallworth (Pima)

Pima standout Sydni Stallworth earned First-Team All-American status last year while helping the Aztecs to a third place finish at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. The Palo Verde grad signed with Alaska-Anchorage. Her jersey is hanging in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

Noteworthy:

-Former Tucson High standout Alexis Cortez transferred from East Carolina to Utah Valley over the winter break. She played in three games and averaged almost four points a game for East Carolina. Cortez was ESPN’s No. 22 ranked guard when she graduated in 2016. She is the highest ranked recruit to ever sign with Utah Valley. Cortez is the fifth highest scoring girl in Arizona history with 2,479 points. She will be eligible to play again at the end of the fall of 2017.

-Former Flowing Wells standout Lyndsay Leikem graduated from Indiana in three years and is completing her fourth year of eligibility at Missouri-Kansas City where she can concentrate on a criminal justice degree.

-Former ASDB standout Sabina Shysh competes in Soccer, Basketball & Track & Field at Gallaudet. She earned recognitions in basketball and soccer, where she was named Rookie of the Year in 2015. She played and started in all 27 basketball games last year and averaged 12.6 points. Has not seen action on the court this year.
