South Mountain assistant coach Matt Bjorklund was on hand Wednesday afternoon to collect the signatures of two of the top players in Tucson, point guard Mikey Silva and center Santino Duarte. The standouts signed with the Cougars at a ceremony held at Sunnyside High School.
“I committed a week ago and my parents are extremely excited,” Duarte said. “This will be an important step for me to get an education and get my life started.”
The duo will be joining former Blue Devil Jacob Inclan next year. The Southern Arizona Player of the Year last season, Inclan was named the ACCAC Player of the Week for South Mountain in November.
“It will be great to join Jacob again,” Silva added. “For me, I will be the first in my family to go to college and it’s a good opportunity.”
No. 16 Sunnyside won the 6A Southern Region and will host No. 17 Mesa on Friday night in the Play-In tournament.
