Over 600 elementary students took part in the annual track meet hosted by the Amphitheater School District on Friday morning. The coaches and athletes of the Canyon del Oro Track & Field team completed over 30 years of community service by running, announcing and awarding ribbons at each event held at the high school.

The district-wide 4th and 5th grade track meet is a showcase event for the Amphitheater School District and its continued support of Physical Education and the Arts at the elementary level. Each of the 14 (and soon to be 15) elementary schools in the district provides qualified instruction in physical education, adaptive physical education, music, band, orchestra, art, library studies and computers.

University of Arizona head Cross Country/Track & Field coach Fred Harvey was once again on hand to open the meet at Canyon del Oro. Harvey spoke on the rich legacy left by former CDO and Arizona hurdler Lezo Urreliztieta who passed away in 2013. Urreliztieta was a state-champion for the Dorados.

#LiveLikeLezo was the theme of the day to help, not only honor his memory, but show students the importance of getting good grades and being a better person, just like Lezo.

Students competed in numerous events including the mile run, 400-meter race, 100 meter hurdles, shot put and long jump. There were also several races held to celebrate the diversity of the district and its commitment to provide adaptive services so all children can succeed without barriers.

Members of the UA track & field team were also present and handed out ribbons to the competitors.
