The Arizona basketball team held a press conference Thursday to announce, to nobody’s surprise, that freshman Lauri Markkanen was declaring for the NBA Draft.
“I don’t know if I have ever coached a player that has given more of himself and has cared more about the University of Arizona, his teammates, our team, our program, than this guy right here,” Wildcats coach Sean Miller said in his introductory comments.
Miller didn’t give any updates on other Wildcats who might be considering jumping to the professional ranks, saying any announcements likely would come individually.
“He gave us his heart and his soul,” Miller said of Markkanen. “He also gave us his talent.”
Markkanen, a 7-foot forward from Finland, has not decided on an agent yet, his father, Pekka Markkanen, said later.
