Amphitheater lineman David Watson commits to Arizona

Amphitheater standout lineman David Watson was offered by the University of Arizona in February, and the First Team All-Southern Arizona selection accepted that offer Saturday.

“It is very rare that a local kid gets a full-ride offer and he is very excited,” his mother, Laura Espinoza-Watson told AllSportsTucson.com in February.

Espinoza-Watson was a three-time All-American softball player at Arizona and David Watson’s father, David Watson, was an offensive lineman for the Wildcats.

As we first reported, Watson was named “Outstanding Lineman” at an Oregon camp in the summer of 2015 when he was only a sophomore.

Watson is approaching 6-7 and weighs 295 pounds and he is currently playing baseball for the Panthers.

“Arizona is getting a great person as well as an outstanding football player,” Amphitheater head coach Jorge Mendivil said. “Him deciding on staying in Tucson is not only great for Arizona but also great for all those that want to continue watching him play.

“This is huge for his family and for the Amphi family. We are looking for a huge senior year.”

Watson helped lead the Panthers to an 8-3 record last year, breaking an 0-12 run. Amphitheater also won the 4A Gila Region.
