NBA summer leagues feature nine former Arizona players, Palo Verde grad Cotton

Some of Sean Miller’s top players over the last five seasons will take part in the NBA summer leagues held in Orlando, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas over the next two weeks.

Other players such as Derrick Williams, Solomon Hill, Aaron Gordon and T.J. McConnell are too far along in their careers to play in the summer leagues, which generally feature rookies through second-year pros.

Stanley Johnson, entering his third season with Detroit, is not playing with the Pistons this summer but he is practicing with the team in Orlando.

The nine players who will compete and try to impress NBA teams and scouts read like a who’s who of Miller recruits. Here’s a list with former Palo Verde High School standout Bryce Cotton (Providence) listed as well.

Additionally, former Wildcats Jud Buechler and Miles Simon are on the Lakers’ coaching staff in Las Vegas. Buechler is serving as the head coach and Simon — recently hired by the Lakers — will be one of his assistants.

Bret Brielmaier is expected to be in Las Vegas as part of the Nets’ staff.

A possibility exists that Matt Brase, the head coach of Houston’s G-League team Rio Grande, will be in Las Vegas as part of the Rockets’ staff.

Lakers coach Luke Walton and Warriors coach Steve Kerr will be in attendance at the Thomas & Mack Arena in Vegas.
