Kayla Green named WAC Pitcher of the Week for third time; Andie Larkins & Maria Vanezza-Caldera also recognized

Kayla Green (WAC)

Kayla Green (Cienega), a junior right-hander for New Mexico State, went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA over 19 innings pitched last week while holding opponents to a .130 batting average. She allowed just five unearned runs on nine hits while striking out 13 and walking six in three starts on the week.

Green opened the week by holding UTEP to just two hits over six innings in an 8-6 win over the Miners. She then earned a combined shutout to open WAC play where she allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out a pair over six innings. In the series finale, Green tallied new career-high seven strikeouts in the victory.

Andie Larkins (SU)

Seattle U’s Andie Larkins (Sahuaro) went 1-1 with a 0.58 ERA with seven strikeouts over 12 innings last week to earn WAC Pitcher of the Week consideration.

Maria Vanezza-Caldera (Pima)

Maria Vanezza-Caldera (Tucson) was named ACCAC Player of the Week for Pima. Caldera went 7-for-9 (.778) with five runs scored, three RBI and three doubles.

This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but collegiate and professional recognitions. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know.

We recognized 144 athletes in 2017. We are up to 51 for 2018.
