Update: Arizona Wildcats one baseball win over ASU away from Territorial Cup Series trophy

ASU has claimed the Territorial Cup Series title four consecutive years, but Arizona can snap that streak with Friday night’s game with the Sun Devils at Hi Corbett Field.

Arizona has 11 points and ASU 10 with the baseball series being the final determination at least as far as the competition on the field is concerned.

For a school to be the winner of the Territorial Cup Series Trophy, it must accumulate 11 points without the other school reaching 11.

The Wildcats have already beaten the Sun Devils twice in baseball, in Phoenix in March and 6-4 on Thursday night at Hi Corbett Field. Arizona technically has earned a point in baseball because it is assured at least a split of the four-game season series. If the teams split a regular-season matchup, each team receives a point.

ASU must beat Arizona in the last two games to tie the competition at 11. If that happens, the team with the highest Directors’ Cup standing takes the Territorial Cup Series trophy.

ASU is currently 36th in the Directors’ Cup Standings while Arizona is all the way down at 61st.

So it comes down to this: One more win in baseball and Arizona takes the Territorial Cup Series trophy. If ASU wins the last two games, the Sun Devils will keep the trophy in Tempe for the fifth consecutive year.

Here are the Territorial Cup Series guidelines and 2017-18 results:

— Each sport will be worth one (1) point.
— The point is awarded to the team that wins a season series.
— If the teams play once in a given season (football) then that game counts as one point.
— For baseball and softball, all regular season games count towards season series tally, including the non-conference games.
— For swimming and diving, cross country, golf, and track and field only, one point is awarded to whichever team finishes higher in the Pac-12 Championship.
— If teams split the regular season match-ups, then each team receives a point for that sport.
— In the event of a tie the following tie-breaker will be used: University with higher finish in the Directors’ Cup Standings.
— In the event of a tie after the Directors’ Cup Standings are used the Territorial Cup will end in a tie.
