The District 5 and District 12 Little League All-Star playoffs continued on Friday night with 12 games played at various parks in the Tucson area. The various divisional playoffs will take up most of the summer with state and regional action taking place in July.

District 5 will host the West Region Junior Girls Softball Tournament from July 14-19 and District 12 will host the 8-10 State Baseball Tournament from July 12-25.

Thornydale beat Tucson Mountain 8-7 Friday night at Arthur Pack to win the D-5 8-10 Softball championship. Thornydale will face the District 13 champions in the first round of the state tournament scheduled to start on July 12 in Avondale.

Thornydale beat Tucson Mountain 21-6 on Monday night in the first round of the playoffs but Tucson Mountain forced a third game after beat Thornydale 14-9 Thursday night.

“I was nervous tonight but I believed in my teammates,” starting pitcher Samantha Hudgens said. “We work well together. We are a team.”

Gianna Torres plays infield for Thornydale much like her father Erik Torres back in his Sunnyside Little League days. Torres was part of the 1992 Junior League World Series championship team before playing at Sunnyside High School and the University of Arizona.

“This is really more rewarding,” Torres said on watching and coaching his daughter. “Tucson has a long history with Little League and this is what the game should be.”

Marana beat Thornydale 27-23 in the other championship game played at Arthur Pack Friday night.

Marana went 2-0 to win the series against Thornydale to win the 9-11 Softball championship but it wasn’t as easy as it looked. Marana beat Thornydale 21-8 on Thursday night and then built a 16-6 lead on Thornydale on Friday night only to see Thornydale take a 22-20 lead. Marana scored seven runs down the stretch to pull out the victory.

“My team is awesome,” pitcher Elianna Andersen said. “We have a great defense and they are amazing.”

Marana moves on to the state tournament scheduled to start on July 13 in Avondale.

Copper Hills will face Sunnyside tonight at Mission Manor at 6:30 p.m. in 8-10 Softball action. Sunnyside needs to win to force an “If Game” since Copper Hills beat Sunnyside 11-1 in the first round on Wednesday.
