For the third time in two years, RUF MMA will bring their cage and stable of fighters to the Old Pueblo on Saturday, Aug. 11 when they host “RUF 27” on the floor of the Tucson Convention Center Arena.
RUF MMA looks to section off the 9,275 seat arena and pack about 5,000 avid fight fans into the TCC. With a card of 16 Tucsonan cage fighters, those seats will be filled with what is widely known in the combat sports community as well versed, very fight savvy fight fans. Having home grown talent fighting in front of their families, friends and rival gyms, the cage should have no shortage of intense action.
Headlining “RUF 27” is local pro star fighter and No. 1 welterweight in Southern AZ Joel Champion (4-1), fighting out of APEX gym here in Tucson, AZ. Champion will be fighting for the vacant 170 lb RUF Pro World Title Belt against Australian Matt Frincu (13-3), who just came off a 3 round battle against Christian Aguilera at LFA, where Frincu, fighting out of ACS in Tempe, won by Unanimous Decision.
In the co-main event, undercard, is a middleweight title bout featuring local Tucsonans and Native American fighters from both Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui Tribes. Eddie ‘Crazyface’ Arizmendi, fighting out of APEX GYM in Tucson, makes his return to the cage after a two year absence. Arizmendi will be taking on Daviante “King Kong” Jones of Parker, Arizona who is an excellent striker. Both will be fighting for RUF MMA’s 180 lb title.
The last time AST covered Arizmendi, or least tried to, was when he fought for the World Fighting Federation and, for lack of a better term, was a no show for his scheduled fight with Kobe Ortiz for Combate 13 at Casino del Sol in April of 2017. Nonetheless, Arizmendi is a very talented mixed martial artist and has been a popular athlete in the Old Pueblo, going back to his days as a high school football player in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Expect Arizmendi to always bring a large contingent of fight fans.
Additional pro fights featuring Tucson MMA cage warriors include Ed “Wild” West taking on Daniel “SCRAPY” Soto of Chihuahua, Mexico. These two will be fighting for a RUF MMA title as well. Ralphy Pacheco (Tucson) vs Arturo “Chucky” Guzman (Tucson) is almost certain to get the crowd rowdy for this All Old Pueblo rumble.
Joel Lopez, President of Ringside Promotions, LLC & RUF MMA, said “This MMA event will feature a full cast of world class match ups and world titles, with UFC stars in attendance, pitting only the best matchups outside of the UFC. We’re so excited to bring RUF 27 to the TCC and to Tucson for the 3rd time in 2 years. This event will feature local and international fighters traveling in from Phoenix, Parker, Mexico, Australia and even Brasil. This might as well be the biggest MMA event next to the UFC coming to town. This is going to be a spectacular fight night you won’t want to miss!”
Tickets for “RUF 27” start at $32.00 and went on sale through Ticketmaster on Monday, July 9th, 2018. Tickets will also be available at the Tucson Conventions Center Box Office at 260 S Church Ave, Tucson, AZ 85701.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and fights start at 7:00 p.m.
