GOLF: Jarrod Johnson wins IHOP Classic; golf season starts on Monday

Ironwood Ridge standout Jarrod Johnson finished 2-under-par to win the IHOP Classic by one stroke at the Grand Canyon University Golf Club this past weekend. Johnson shot a 2-under 69 on Saturday and an even 71 on Sunday to hold off Desert Vista standout Scott Schlader (72-69, 141). Schlader took third place at the Division I state championship last October.

Fellow Nighthawk Connor Wierman finished 7-over to take 17th. Catalina Foothills standout Maya Benita took ninth with a 7-over 149 in the girls championship division.

The 2018 high school season starts on Monday, Aug. 13 with the girls of Mountain View taking on Marana at Quarry Pines and Tucson travels to Arizona National to play Sabino.
