Renowned boxing journalist and industry insider Norm Frauenheim of 15Rounds.com has reported that WBO Featherweight Champion Oscar Valdez is now going take part in an undercard bout for Kovalev-Alvarez II on Feburary 2nd in Jerry’s World, Ford Cowboy’s Stadium outside of Dallas. Valdez was set to take on Andoni Gago of Spain but Top Rank and ESPN has shifted or cancelled all bouts that were set to take place in Tucson on Jan 12th. Valdez will face Carmine Tommasone of Italy in Texas instead.
When Valdez answers the opening bell on February 2nd, it will be the first time in nearly a year that he will have defended his title since suffering a brutally broken jaw against Scott Quigg in Los Angeles in March.
The Tucson Convention Center had been reported to be the venue Top Rank and ESPN had wanted to use to host Valdez’s return to Tucson. However the venue is spoken for on January 12th and will be hosting hockey that weekend. ESPN did not have any other dates open to make a postponement for having the bout in Tucson possible.
Fighters for all of the undercard bout that were scheduled for January 12th have been shifted to other cards or cancelled all together.
As fight night approaches for Valdez, we will have more on his Tommasone and get quotes from Valdez and his camp.
Oscar Valdez Jr.'s return moves from Tucson Jan 12 to Feb. 2 at Cowboys Ford Center on undercard of Kovalev-Alvarez 2. Move brewing for nearly a week with Top Rank shifting undercard fighters for Jan. 12 to other dates. New foe for Valdez, Italy's Tommasone for Spain's Gago.
