Soccer: 6 Region titles decided Tuesday night; 3 more on the line Thursday

A big Tuesday night in local soccer action with six teams clinching region titles. Winning a region title in 5A and 6A does not guarantee a playoff spot so those teams have to end up in the top 24 to guarantee a conference play-in game:

No. 5 Tucson boys clinched the 6A Metro Region with a with 6-2 win over No. 37 Laveen Cesar Chavez and the No. 18 Tucson girls clinched a 6A Metro Region title with a 5-1 win over No. 30 Cesar Chavez.

No. 2 Sunnyside clinched the 5A Southern Region with a 5-1 win over No. 18 Buena but No. 2 Ironwood Ridge needs to beat No. 13 Marana on Thursday to claim the 5A Southern Region championship on the girl’s side.

No. 4 Rincon/UHS beat No. 15 Cholla 6-0 to win the 5A Sonoran title but the 5A Sonoran title on the girl’s side will be decided on Thursday with No. 9 Mountain View taking on No. 11 Rincon/UHS.

PROJECTED 5A PLAYOFF TEAMS
BOYS: No. 2 Sunnyside, No. 4 Rincon/UHS, No. 5 Desert View, No. 9 Cienega, No. 12 Flowing Wells, No. 15 Cholla, No. 18 Buena and No. 20 Nogales. No. 24 Empire needs to beat Flowing Wells Thursday night.
GIRLS: No. 2 Ironwood Ridge, No. 9 Mountain View, No. 10 Cienega, No. 11 Rincon/UHS and No. 13 Marana. No. 22 Buena and No. 24 Nogales are on the edge.

The No. 4 Douglas boys claimed the 4A Gila title last Thursday and the No. 10 Walden Grove girls claimed the 4A Gila title with a 4-0 win over No. 44 Amphitheater.

The No. 2 Salpointe boys beat No. 8 Catalina Foothills 3-1 in overtime to win the 4A Kino Region and the No. 7 Catalina Foothills girls beat No. 1 Salpointe 3-2 to force a region title game against No. 3 Sahuaro on Thursday.

PROJECTED 4A PLAYOFF TEAMS
BOYS: No. 2 Salpointe (automatic), No. 4 Douglas (automatic), No. 6 Amphitheater, No. 8 Catalina Foothills, No. 11 Palo Verde, No. 13 Walden Grove and No. 16 Canyon del Oro.
GIRLS: No. 1 Salpointe, No. 3 Sahuaro, No. 7 Catalina Foothills, No. 8 Canyon del Oro, No. 10 Walden Grove, No. 12 Douglas and No. 18 Palo Verde. No. 21 Rio Rico is on the edge.

No. 18 Sahuarita won the 3A South last week on the boy’s side and No. 8 Sabino and No. 9 Sahuarita ended region play tied for the 3A South title but Sahuarita has a better conference record so the Mustangs claim the automatic berth.

BOYS: No. 18 Sahuarita (automatic) and No. 20 Tanque Verde. No. 22 Sabino is on the edge.
GIRLS: No. 8 Sabino, No. 9 Sahuarita (automatic) and No. 14 Pusch Ridge. No. 24 Tanque Verde is on the edge.
