Sabino girls advance to 3A semifinals; Salpointe boys playing for 4A soccer championship

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 1 Sabino beat No 8 Chinle 55-43 to advance to the 3A semifinal round to be played Friday at the Gila River Arena in Glendale. The Sabercats will take on No. 4 Holbrook at 6 p.m.

Holbrook beat No. 5 Tanque Verde 57-45 in the early game played in Prescott Valley on Monday. The Hawks finished the year with a 23-8 record that included the first trip to the quarterfinal round in program history. The Hawks will lose standouts Nikya Orange and Sydney Renteria to graduation.

The Sabercats have been to the state final three times, winning it all under John Bart in 1990. Michelle Schultz was the star of that team and she went on to play for Valparaiso.

BOYS SOCCER

No. 1 Salpointe will be playing for the seventh state championship in program history Tuesday night against No. 6 Prescott. The game is slated for Gilbert Williams Field at 6:30 p.m.

Alfonso Cabrera leads the Lancers with 15 goals and Eric Galindo has 13.

Cabrera and Galindo were members of the TSA (FC Tucson Youth Club) to make it to the national club championship last summer in Boston. Other members of that elite group were Manuel Quiroz of Sunnyside, Ryan Whitney of Catalina Foothills, Zak Mohamed of Rincon/University, and Emmanuel Leon Valenzuela of Tucson High.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The 3A quarterfinals will be played Tuesday in Prescott Valley. No. 5 Pusch Ridge has never been to a state final and No. 8 Sabino finished runner-up in 1993to Sunnyside in overtime. If both teams win, they will face each other in the semifinal round on Friday.
