Tucson loses another close game to Bakersfield, Michael Chaput acquired from Montreal

Loss to Bakersfield

Monday night, the Tucson Roadrunners lost another close game to the Bakersfield Condors 3-1. The Condors, the AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, extended their AHL-best winning streak to an incredible 17 games.

After a scoreless first period, Bakersfield’s Joe Grambella opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the second period. The Roadrunners tied it up less than two minutes later with Giovanni Fiore’s tenth of the season. The Dakota Mermis earned the primary assist on the play and Brayden Burke got the secondary.

Bakersfield jumped out to a 2-1 lead before the period ended and would later add an empty net goal in the third, leaving the final score at 3-1.

Chaput acquisition and paper transactions

The Arizona Coyotes organization made only one move during yesterday’s NHL trade deadline, trading Jordan Weal to the Montreal Canadiens organization for Michael Chaput. Chaput will report to Tucson, plays center, and has 16 points in 24 games with Montreal’s AHL affiliate this year.

The NHL trade deadline is also the deadline for NHL teams filling out paper transactions. Paper transactions are internal designations by NHL clubs that allow up to four of their current roster NHL players to play in the AHL playoffs. The Coyotes filled out two yesterday for Conor Garland and Ilya Lyubushkin, meaning that both players will report to Tucson if the Roadrunners qualify for the playoffs this season.
