Tucson Sugar Skulls Victorious in Franchise’s First Game in Professional Indoor Football League

Information from the Tucson Sugar Skulls contributed to this report.

The first game in Tucson Sugar Skulls history was a memorable won, because they not only won, but they dominated fellow expansion team San Diego 65-44 on Sunday night in a professional Indoor Football League game.

Running back Mike Jones (Bethune-Cookman) and wide receiver Shaquan Curenton (Scottsdale Community College) each had three touchdowns for the Sugar Skulls, who play their home opener Sunday at the Tucson Arena against Bismarck at 3 p.m.

Defensive lineman Keith Jones Jr. (Tennessee-Martin) added a fumble recovery for a touchdown Sunday against the Strike Force, which is 0-2. Jones was third in the IFL last season with the champion Iowa Barnstormers with 5.5 sacks.

“We will be fast and we will be physical,” head coach Marcus Coleman said. “I’m happy with the talent we’re putting on the field. We’re not approaching this season as a new franchise building for the future. We’re trying to win a championship right now.”

Dee Maggit Jr. (Hawaii) also had two interceptions for the Sugar Skulls.
