Baseball: Chris Moon Memorial Tournament update

Flowing Wells beat Pomona (CO) 6-5 on Wednesday to open up play at the Chris Moon Memorial Tournament held at Cherry Field. The Caballeros took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of third and held on for the win.

The Opening Ceremonies took place after the Flowing Wells victory and the Moon family was recognized along with the family of former Tucson High track and field athlete Timothy L. Bowles. Bowles was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009.

Tucson beat San Marcos (CA) 6-0 and Arvada Wets (CO) beat Cesar Chavez 14-2 in the two games scheduled after the opening ceremonies.

Derek Villegas went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI to lead Flowing Wells. Jeff Brown went 1-1 with an RBI and he scored 3 runs. Jack Pospisil went 2-3 with a triple and an RBI to lead Pomona. Alan Valdez (W), Villegas and Daniel Davila (S) saw pitching action for the Caballeros with Valdez putting in 5 innings of work. Trevor Abernathy (L) and Connor Bateman threw for Pomona.

Flowing Wells led 6-4 heading to the seventh inning but Pomona loaded the bases with two outs and Tyler Murphy picked up a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead down to 6-5. Davila closed the door on the comeback with a strikeout.

Diego Bejarano went 2-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI to lead Tucson past San Marcos. Mateo Sierras and Mario Bejarano also picked up RBIs for the Badgers and Gerardo Mungaray hit a double. Diego Sandoval, Brent Hyman and Aiden Johnson had singles for San Marcos. Nicholas Arias (W) and Dominic Rodriguez combined for 10 strikeouts. Hyman, Ian Oakley, Johnson and Aiden Speake took the mound for San Marcos and the crew only gave up 2 earned runs while striking out 8.

Tucson scored 4 unearned runs in the bottom of the third and never looked back.

Dominic Folks went 3-4 with an RBI to lead Arvada West. Braden Thompson picked up 2 hits as did Matthew Verdugo and Evan Hurlburt. Verdugo and Hurlburt had 3 RBI each and Raul Villarreal had a double and an RBI. Victor Guerrero went 2-2 to lead Cesar Chavez. Jesus Avila and William Guzman collected RBIs. Jay Lambert, Addison Southwick, Noah McCandless (W) and Liam Spaw threw for Arvada West and Jose Velazquez (L) and Jaden Bivens took the mound for Cesar Chavez. Velazquez collected 7 strikeouts.

Arvada West led 5-2 after six but the team exploded for 9 runs in the top of the seventh for the win.
