Pusch Ridge senior Sofia Fetsis claimed her second state singles championship by outlasting Chandler Prep standout No. 2 Sangeet Bhalla 6-1, 7-6 Monday at ASU. Fetsis led 6-1 in the second set but Bhalla scored five straight to make things interesting.

“I knew I had to focus on one ball at a time and to keep moving my feet,” the top-seeded Fetsis said. “Now, I think we have a good shot at winning as a team also. We just have to keep playing the way we have been.”

As a team, No. 2 Pusch Ridge will host No. 7 Sahuarita Tuesday in the Division III quarterfinal round. The Lions beat Sahuarita 5-4 in region play on April 9. Pusch Ridge is working on three state titles in a row.

The Pusch Ridge doubles team of Colleen Harris and Emma Reilly came into the state playoffs ranked No. 4 and the duo came up with an upset over No. 2 Lacie Whitmer and Ashlyn McMaster, Thatcher (6-4, 6-4) to win the D-III title. The duo also defeated the top-ranked team in the state in the semifinal round.

No. 1 Ethan Lee beat No. 2 Luke Urlaub of Desert Vista 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 to win the D-I boys singles championship for Rincon/University. It was the first singles title for the Rangers since Adrian Lai won back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003.

This match between Div. I top seed Ethan Lee of Rincon/University and Desert Vista’s No. 2 seed Luke Urlaub has lasted almost 2 hours and 50 min! ⏰

The final score is 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

The D-II singles title on the girl’s side featured two powerhouse athletes from Catalina Foothills as No. 1 Emily Flowers beat No. 3 Annabelle Mulick 6-1, 6-0. The win was the 12th doubles title for the school under Kristie Stevens. Stevens is moving into an administrative role in the Amphitheater District and this will be her last spring coaching the Falcons.

Steven collected 14 team titles, 12 doubles titles and 10 singles championships and she is going for another team title before she moves on.
