Frog & Firkin Softball Playoffs Roundup: Three Southern Arizona Teams in 3A State Semifinals


No. 7 Sabino, No. 9 Sahuarita and No. 14 Pusch Ridge — all from Southern Arizona — have defied the odds based on their seeding to comprise three of the four teams in the Class 3A state semifinals after each posted victories on Friday night.

In games at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix, Sabino beat River Valley 5-0, Pusch Ridge topped Yuma Catholic 8-5 and Sahuarita upset No. 1 seed Winslow 4-0.

Pusch Ridge (18-10) plays Sabino in one semifinal game at Rose Mofford on Saturday at 11 a.m. while Sahuarita (28-5) plays at the same time and place against Snowflake.

The championship game is slated for Monday night at 7:45 at ASU’s Farrington Softball Stadium.

Danielle Kirchhofer pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking one, and she also had a two-run home run for Sabino (20-3) against River Valley.

Kirchhofer was supported by three players each with two hits and an RBI — Sydney Gray, Jillian Calloway and Ashley Stewart.

2A State Playoffs

No. 1 seed Benson defeated Phoenix Christian 24-0 in five innings on Friday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2A state playoffs at Rose Mofford.

Benson (28-3) was led by four hits apiece from Emily Darwin and Abby Workman. Darwin had two home runs and six RBIs. Workman scored four times.

Kayla Sherman, Letty Lopez and Jamie Barney each had three hits for the Bobcats. Sherman and Lopez each drove in three runs and Barney had two RBIs.

Sherman (three innings pitched) and Barney (two innings) also combined to limit Phoenix Christian without a hit.

Benson plays No. 9 Arizona Lutheran this morning at 9 at Rose Mofford.

Behind a seven-run second inning, No. 5 San Manuel defeated No. 12 Willcox 12-2 in five innings Friday night at Rose Mofford.

San Manuel (18-5) plays Morenci this morning at 9 in a quarterfinal game.

Aubrey Encinas and Samantha Waddell each had two hits and four RBIs for San Manuel against Willcox. Freshman Jazmyne Waddell struck out 11 batters and walked three in five innings.

1A State Playoffs

No. 2 seed St. David fell to No. 7 Mogollon 6-4 and No. 6 Valley Union lost to No. 3 Superior 6-5 on Friday night at Rose Mofford.

St. David finished 16-5 this season and Valley Union was 21-8.
