Frog & Firkin Softball Playoffs Roundup: Sunnyside Run-Rules Sunnyslope to Advance in 5A Double-Elimination Bracket


Sunny day for Sunnyside on Saturday as the No. 4-seeded Blue Devils run-ruled No. 16 Sunnyslope 11-0 in five innings in a Class 5A double-elimination bracket game at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.

The Blue Devils (19-5) await the outcome of Tuesday’s Empire-Centennial game for their next opponent. Empire plays Centennial in a winners’ bracket game at Rose Mofford.

Sunnyside will play the loser of that game on Thursday slated for Rose Mofford.

Ilysa Giron hit a home run Saturday for Sunnyside, which has won 11 of its last 12 games.

In another 5A game on Saturday, No. 3 Ironwood Ridge outlasted No. 7 Mountain View 7-3 in a double-elimination bracket game at Amphi. The Nighthawks (22-5) advance to play Thursday at Rose Mofford against the loser of Willow Canyon and Scottsdale Horizon (those teams play Tuesday).

Shelby Thompson earned the win for Ironwood Ridge against Mountain View surrendering three runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out four.

Jaiden Reid went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Ironwood Ridge. Rachel Hirschfield finished with three RBIs.

Ceci Sandoval went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead Mountain View in hits. Chloe Cordova, Hallie Mann, Tayler Garner, Clarissa Kennedy and Cailey Flint each drove in a run for Mountain View.

Class 4A Second Round Elimination

No. 8 Douglas had its successful 20-6 season come to an end with a 12-2 loss against No. 12 Vista Grande in a double-elimination bracket game Saturday at Amphi.

Douglas ent 10-0 in the 4A Gila Region, the first region title for the Bulldogs since 2016. Alondra Lugo got the start for Douglas. Shainah Nerio had an RBI single, Jane Aleman had an RBI single and Isabel Tanabe had the other single for the Bulldogs.

Class 3A Semifinals

No. 7 Sabino advanced to the Class 3A state title game with a 3-0 win over No. 14 Pusch Ridge on Saturday at Rose Mofford.

The Sabercats (21-3) will play No. 4 Snowflake at ASU’s Farrington Stadium on Monday at 7:45 p.m. in the title game. Snowflake got past No. 9 Sahuarita 3-2 at Rose Mofford on Saturday.

Sabino ace Danielle Kirchhofer allowed on two hits in seven innings against Pusch Ridge. Kirchhofer struck out five and did not issue a walk.

Freshman Kinzee Anderson had two doubles and an RBI for the Sabercats, who are on a seven-game winning streak.

Sahuarita ends its season 28-7. Hailey Tanori batted .607 to lead the Mustangs this season.

2A State Quarterfinals

Top-seeded Benson continued to roll with a run-rule 10-0 victory over No. 9 Arizona Lutheran in six innings in a 2A quarterfinal game at Rose Mofford on Saturday.

No. 5 San Manuel fell 2-1 to No. 4 Morenci in another quarterfinal game. Benson will play Morenci in a semifinal game Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Rose Mofford.

Benson (29-3) won its 16th consecutive game Saturday behind Katie Sherman’s 13 strikeouts with only one walk in her six innings of work. Sherman also had three RBIs and a triple at the plate.

Letty Lopez hit a home run for Benson and Mikayla Wales also had three RBIs with a double.

In San Manuel’s game, the Miners (who finished at 18-7) were led by Taya Dockum‘s two hits and an RBI. Andrea Guerrero also had two hits.
