The regular season was a rollercoaster that featured a stretch in April losing all four games putting the Tucson Sugar Skulls in a 3-5 hole. They would end the season winning four of their last six games to clinch a playoff berth.
This weekend, they will face the Sioux Falls Storm, a team that the Sugar Skulls haven’t played all season. The Storm come into the playoffs with a record of 11-3, losing games to the Arizona Rattlers and Iowa Barnstormers by an average of 14.3 points. Those three teams that they lost to are teams in which the Sugar Skulls have lost close, down-to-the-wire games. Will the experience against those top tier teams payoff against the Storm?
Tucson coach Marcus Coleman talks about the playoff matchup against Sioux Falls and the system the Storm runs. He also discusses what the support of the city of Tucson means to him and the organization.
Running back Mike Jones talks about the playoff game against Sioux Falls, a team they haven’t played all season. He also discusses if playing top teams close sparks any confidence going into this playoff game.
One thing that may play into the Sugar Skulls’ favor is the fact that they have veterans on the team with playoff experience. If they are able to get past Sioux Falls, it would put them on a direct path with the Arizona Rattlers in Phoenix next weekend. One thing is certain, it’s going to be a hard fought, toughnose style game that could come down to the last play. Winning a single playoff game could spark interest for the city of Tucson when it comes to next season and getting more fans in the TCC.
