Frog & Firkin Little League Report: Sunnyside Seniors Rout Oregon 21-0 in Western Regional Baseball Opener


Three Sunnyside pitchers combined on a no-hitter in a four-inning game in which the Tucson team pounded 17 hits in a 21-0 win over Oregon in the opening round of the West Regional Senior Little League tournament today at Sacramento, Calif.

Gerardo Grijalva went 4 for 4 with a double, run and five RBIs and Alex Lopez went 3 for 3 with two doubles, four runs and three RBIs for Sunnyside, which will face Washington in the next round Friday at 1 p.m. Washington had a bye.

Eduardo Torres pitched two innings as the starter and Anthony Rodriguez and Armando Valenzuela each pitched an inning, combining for four strikeouts and one walk. Torres also went 1 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs.

Alonso Bacame went 1 for 1 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, Martin Banuelos was 2 for 2 with a run and three RBIs for Sunnyside, which captured the state championship last week in Payson without losing in four games.

Sunnyside opened with four runs in the first inning before pulling away in the second with an 11-run rally. It sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning and tallied five hits, two walks and one batter that was hit by a pitch. Oregon also committed an error in the inning.
