The opening round of the West Region Junior Softball tournament is in the books with Arizona, Southern California, Utah and Washington advancing in the winner’s bracket. In the double-elimination format, Alaska, Northern California, Oregon and Thornydale will be battling it out in the elimination bracket.

PLAYER OF THE DAY
Devin Bowman of Arizona (Mesa) hit two home runs with a grand slam while going 2-4 with eight RBI.

PITCHER OF THE DAY
Yazmin Gonzalez picked up 11 strikeouts with no earned runs to help pace Southern California past Alaska.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Thornydale outfielder Valarie Scott is taking part in the first-ever T-Mobile Little League Home Run Derby competition. Scott qualified from the Flowing Wells Continental Little League (District 5) at the local challenge where she was the only player to hit a home run.

Five softball finalists will compete at the West Finals at the T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Sunday, July 28. Six finalists from the East will competed at SunTrust Park in Atlanta on Sunday, July 14. The top eight of the 11 competitors will advance to Williamsport in August.

Angelee Calderon, of Sierra Vista Ponytail Little League (District 8), will also be competing in Seattle. Javier Chávez of San Xavier Little League (District 12) will be taking part in the baseball competition. There are 10 finalists from the West in baseball.

Scott played for Flowing Wells Continental Little League but the program merged with Thornydale Little League for the West Regional.
