Frog & Firkin Little League Report: Oro Valley 11U Captures State Championship


The Oro Valley 11U Little League All-Stars continued their dominance in the district and state tournaments with a 9-6 win over Chandler North on Tuesday night in the state title game at Flagstaff’s Dawson Field.

Oro Valley capped its 9-0 stretch in the playoffs behind Christian Soder going 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI and Peyton Carson finishing 2 for 3 with a double and a run against Chandler North.

Oro Valley won their nine games by a combined run total of 67-18.

Cody Milne added an RBI double to Oro Valley’s nine-hit total.

DiAngelo Alexander was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits in the first three innings as Oro Valley built a 9-4 lead. Alexander also had an RBI and run.

Sunnyside Seniors’ Run in Regional Ends

Sunnyside’s Seniors All-Stars had their summer competition come to an end on Tuesday night with a 12-5 loss to Northern California in an elimination bracket game of the West Regional at Sacramento.

Eduardo Torres, Martin Banuelos and Armando Valenzuela each had two hits for Sunnyside, which finished 2-2 in the tournament. Valenzuela also had two RBIs.

The team is comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores from Sunnyside and Desert View. This is the second straight year the Sunnyside Seniors have reached the West Regionals.

The Sunnyside Majors and Juniors are entering their respective West Regionals. The Majors (the age group that ultimately plays at Williamsport, Pa.) start regional play Aug. 4 in San Bernardino, Calif. The Juniors begin their regional games at San Jose this weekend.
