Sabino, A.J. Skaggs Edge Past Catalina Foothills

Coming into this game, both Sabino and Catalina Foothills were looking for their second win of the season. Catalina Foothills was looking to build upon its first victory of the coach Darius Kelly era. For Sabino, it was looking to get back on track after losing in blowout fashion to rival Sahuaro

Sabino’s Michael Masunas is a two-way star who set the tone early on with his aggressive defensive play, forcing Catalina Foothills to punt on their opening drive.

Catalina Foothills was up for the challenge going blow for blow with Sabino making a defensive grudge match early in the game. Both teams forced a pair of turnover on downs making leaving both offenses searching for answers.

It wasn’t tell late in the first quarter that Sabino and quarterback A.J. Skaggs and the Sabino offense got things going with a long methodical drive capped off with a touchdown pass to Michael Masunas. The first quarter would end with Sabino leading 7-0 in a game were both defenses dominated the opening quarter.

With the defenses holding serve it wasn’t tell late in the second quarter with four minutes left that Catalina Foothills put points on the board. The touchdown came from quarterback Conner Alubowicz connecting on a 42 bomb to wideout Derrick Williams tying the game at seven all. However, that wouldn’t last as Sabino answered with another passing touchdown from A.J. Skaggs this time it was a twelve yard pass to wideout Dawson Szarek putting Sabino up 14-7 right before half.

Things really didn’t change much in the third quarter as both offenses looked lost at times. At the seven minute mark of the third quarter Catalina Foothill’s Tejas Dalvi picked off a pass from A.J. Skaggs at the fifty giving the Foothill’s sideline all the momentum. Unfortunately for Catalina Foothills the drive would stall out ending on a turnover on downs.

Sabino would take advantage of the turnover scoring on a five yard touchdown pass to Jayson Petty giving them a 20-7 lead after a missed PAT. the third quarter would end with Sabino leading 20-7 seemingly having complete control of the game.

the start of the fourth quarter was rough offensively for both squads as no one could get any momentum going to sustain a drive.

Catalina Foothills would no go away, cutting into the Sabino lead from another passing touchdown from Conner Alubowicz launching a 57 yard bomb to wideout Garrick Krautz with just over seven minutes left in the game.

After that score the game went silent offensively from both sidelines. Sabino was able to make play after play on defense to keep Catalina Foothills off the scoreboard.

With two minutes left in the game Catalina Foothills was able to get the ball back looking to have a final drive to win the game. That drive didn’t even get going before an interception from Sabino’s Diego Armijo to seal the game for Sabino.

Sabino’s A.J. Skaggs ended his night with 196 yards passing with Three touchdowns and one pick. Needless to say it was a great bounce back performance from the senior quarterback.

After the win Sabino moves to 2-1 on the season, bouncing back with a pivotal win for the Sabercats. Things don’t get any easier for Sabino as they will host 4-0 Blue Ridge.
