VIDEOS of Wings Over Broadway Preview Show of Rincon/University Student-Athletes Grace Driskill, Preston Silvas and Damon Taylor

Our weekly High School Sports Preview Show at Wings Over Broadway (Thursdays at 5 p.m.) included standout student-athletes from Rincon/University this week.

The Rangers’ senior football leaders Preston Silvas and Damon Taylor joined us along with second-year coach Mike Strack. We were also thankful to be joined by accomplished cross country runner Grace Driskill, who is our Eclectic Café Athlete of the Week.

Silvas and Taylor, both four-year lettermen, touched on the impact Strack and his staff, which includes former Rincon head coach Nate Gahn. Strack is the sixth coach for the Rangers in the last 10 years. Gahn, who returned to the school after serving as an assistant at Pima College, is one of those six. He was the head coach from 2009-12.

“The major part of the coaching staff especially with Coach Strack is that he’s most likely focused on building a program instead of just building a team for one game,” said Silvas, a quarterback. “He’s more focused on building an extensive program that’s going to last over the years. He’s trying to change the culture that’s been there the last few years.

“He’s not focused on winning the next game but maybe winning the next seasons.”

Driskill ran a Southern Arizona best time of 18:53.6 to take second place at the Ojo Rojo Invitational held in Chandler last Saturday. The senior earned “Eclectic Café Athlete of the Week” for her performance.
