After an unexpected bye week Salpointe had an extra week to prepare Cactus. Coming into the game, Cactus was 3-0 beating two Tucson teams Ironwood Ridge and Catalina Foothills. However, before Friday, it hadn’t played a team like Salpointe, which has Division I talent on both sides of the football.
Salpointe started off the game on offense and it didn’t take long until it found the end zone. The Lancers scored on a rushing touchdown from Bijan Robinson on a drive in which Salpointe moved the ball methodically down field.
That touchdown opened the flood gates for Salpointe as Cactus had no answer being outscored 27-0 in the first quarter. Salpointe was able to do whatever it wanted to offensively. The quarter was highlighted by a Robinson 50-yard touchdown run dashing right through the Cactus defense to give Salpointe a double-digit lead in the first.
It wasn’t just Robinson having a memorable night early in the first quarter. Salpointe’s Lathan Ransom made his presence felt early with multiple catches with an explosive 41-yard touchdown reception. In that first quarter, the Lancers had three players putting up points, showing how deep they are across the board.
By the end of the first half, the game was well in hand with Salpointe leading Cactus 47-8 leaving no doubt that it is one of the best teams not only in Tucson, but in the state of Arizona.
Things slowed down in the second half with the only points score being another Robinson 50-yard touchdown run capping off the night for the Lancers. With the final score being 54-8 Salpointe was able to show off all their weapons by doing whatever they wanted to on the field.
In a game like this it is hard to pick just one standout performance. So I would like to highlight three players who shined in the game against Cactus. Those players are Robinson, Ransom, and quarterback Jackson Bolin. All three had monster games leading the way to the blowout win.
Robinson had 10 rushes for 170 yards, two catches for 54 yards giving him a total of 224 all-purpose yards with four touchdowns. Any other game this would be the most dominating performance of the game.
Ransom had himself a huge game as well with five catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Plus, he showed off his versatility with two rushes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Finally, Bolin had possibly his best game of the season going 9 for 13 for 200 yards with three touchdowns. he finished the night with a quarterback rating of 151.4 with a completion percentage of 69 percent.
Salpointe is 3-0 with a matchup against Tucson High next Friday night at Tucson High. Robinson is only 190 yards away from the city rushing record held by former Arizona Wildcat Ka’Deem Carey, so that game against Tucson could be a night that this city will never forget.
