Sabino QB A.J. Skaggs Earns APS Digital Print/Tucson Conquistadores Player of the Week Amid Sabercats’ Playoff Push

Sabino junior quarterback A.J. Skaggs is coming off a career performance passing for 304 yards and five touchdowns in a 48-2 win over Tanque Verde, but more important to him and the Sabercats is a 3A South and automatic bid to the state playoffs.

Sabino (5-2 overall, 2-0 in the 3A South) plays at Pusch Ridge (4-3, 2-0) on Friday night at 7 in a game that is very important for both teams.

The Sabercats are in contention for the region title with the Lions and Safford (5-2, 2-0) with three games left in the regular season. Sabino, ranked No. 9 in the 3A, must win to keep its region title hope alive and to move back into the top 8, which means it would host at least a first-round game of the playoffs.

Pusch Ridge, ranked No. 18, needs to string wins together to move into the top 16 and stay in that range to qualify for the playoffs, if it does not win the 3A South title.

Skaggs, who has 2,972 passing yards in 19 varsity games in his career, was selected the AllSportsTucson.com APS Digital Print/Tucson Conquistadores Player of the Week for his performance against Tanque Verde.

He has completed 106 of 163 pass attempts this season for 1,348 yards with 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Senior receiver Diego Armijo (30 catches for 373 yards with four touchdowns) is Skaggs’ top receiver. Dawson Szarek leads the Sabercats with five touchdown receptions. He has 24 receptions for 263 yards.
