Nick Gonzales named Baseball Player of the Year Contender by the NCAA

Former Cienega standout Nick Gonzales (New Mexico State) was named a College Baseball Player of the Year Contender by the NCAA on Wednesday.

The NCAA release:

“Gonzales dominated college baseball everywhere he went last season. The 5-10 junior led Division I with a .432 batting average and added a 1.305 OPS. He then showed off his wood bat skills in the Cape Cod Baseball League by hitting .351 with seven home runs in a championship run with the Cotuit Kettleers. Gonzales is set up for another monster season offensively in a lineup with plenty of firepower protecting him.”

This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but collegiate and professional recognitions. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know.
