When you are hosting a top-ten team, one of the essential aspects of pulling off the upset is a hot start. That is precisely what Arizona was able to do, jumping on UCLA early with a 23-to-8 lead in the first quarter.
Arizona led by none other than Aari McDonald, who took her game to another level, finishing with 27-points and only turned the ball over twice, the whole game.
From start to finish, this game was dominated by Arizona in nearly every aspect of the game. Finding a scoring lift outside of McDonald was a significant factor in Arizona’s 92-66 win. That player was Sam Thomas, who went off from the three-point line going 4-for-4 from the arc. She would finish with 20-points more than doubling her 8.9 scoring average for the season.
The last time Arizona was able to beat a top-ten team was 16-years-ago against seventh-ranked Stanford.
Here is the coach and player’s reaction from what was a historic night inside McKale Center.
