Wings Over Broadway Southern Arizona Boys Hoops Player of the Week: Salpointe’s Evan Nelson


One of the games of the year featured the 4A Kino showdown between Catalina Foothills at Salpointe on Friday night with a gym filled to capacity.

With the 4A Kino title on the line and rankings that might impact the 4A state playoff seedings, Salpointe (25-1, 8-1 4A Kino) pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Catalina Foothills 48-39.

The Lancers prevailed with senior guard Evan Nelson, bound for Harvard on a basketball scholarship, one of the top players with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and a steal. That performance matched with last Tuesday’s 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists in an 85-62 win over CDO merits Nelson the AllSportsTucson.com Wings Over Broadway Southern Arizona Boys Basketball Player of the Week.

Nelson has put together a solid season averaging 16.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

He has 1,322 points in his career along with 362 rebounds and 285 assists.

Salpointe wraps up its regular season at home Tuesday with against Vista Grande.
