Throughout the season, Arizona has been able to upset a pair of top 10 teams in UCLA and Oregon State. However, in its program’s history, Arizona has never defeated a top 5 team.
That ended Friday night when Arizona pulled off the 73-72 upset over No. 4 Stanford with 7,838 in attendance for the top 15 match up. The game was a full team effort with four players in double figures, helping lift some of the pressure from a less than healthy Aari McDonald.
While McDonald was trying to find her shot, Arizona got massive minutes out of Helena Pueyo with eight points in the first quarter. Then, in a critical period in the game, when Stanford was extending their lead to nine, Dominique McBryde answered each run with a run of her own to keep Arizona in the game. Still, McDonald was able to put up 20 points with 13 of those points coming in overtime when she was needed the most.
It was a game of twists and turns that ended in a historic finish for Arizona as it continues on the journey to the NCAA tournament.
