Arizona “Bayou Cats” Land Another New Orleans Recruit — High-Profile Defensive End Ja’Marian Peterson

The commitment today from Class of 2021 6-foot-3 and 238-pound defensive end Ja’Marian Peterson from New Orleans (La.) De La Salle High School is a significant one for Arizona and coach Kevin Sumlin.

Peterson, listed as a three-star recruit by 247Sports, was featured recently by a New Orleans television station for his leadership on and off the field.

“He listens to the messages. We preach on being humble and hungry. Not the guy talking all the time, and is overconfident. The way he works very single day right now, he’s a humble young man. It’s in the classroom, when you see him in the community. I see him with his family watching his little brothers play. Just a humble young man. When he get’s that opportunity to be on the field, he’s hungry, he’s hungry to prove to people. The most important thing is he’s young. He’s going to graduate De La Salle High School at 17 years old. Head to college at 17. Somebody’s going to get a very, very, good young man,” said DLS head coach Ryan Manale in the TV report.

With another commitment from New Orleans, this gives Arizona four from that city in the Class of 2021 and two from De La Salle, joining running back Montrell Johnson Jr.

The other two prospects from the Crescent City are wide receiver Tyrese Johnson of Booker T. Washington and linebacker Kolby Cage of Holy Cross. Cage gave an indication of things to come by being Sumlin’s first commitment on May 5.

Peterson chose Arizona over Colorado, Illinois, and Washington State among others after receiving his offer from Sumlin on June 24.

Peterson is the 18th player to commit to Arizona, the 11th on defense. The Wildcats understandably are trying to shore up their defense after ranking low statistically in those numbers nationally over the last six years.
