It has been a long and winding road with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic creating questions a season would not take place and what that would mean for high school student-athletes, not only in Southern Arizona but across the country.
After all the uncertainty surrounding the season, Salpointe is set to play in its home opener Friday night at 7 against Casa Grande to kickoff the 2020 high school football season.
This isn’t the same Salpointe team people watched over the last couple years. The Lancers lost nine of their top tacklers on defense, and lost one of the best senior classes in recent memory with Lathan Ransom, Bruno Fina, and perhaps the greatest player in Southern Arizona history in Bijan Robinson.
At the most critical position in football, Salpointe welcomes back junior quarterback Treyson Bourguet, who is currently committed to play for Arizona and head coach Kevin Sumlin.
In just seven games played last season, Bourguet put up 805 yards with 13 touchdown passes and only four picks.
Salpointe is also under a new regime with former legendary coach Dennis Bene resigning at the end of the 2019 season. It’ll be up to new head coach Eric Rogers to take the reins and make his mark on the Tucson power.
The Lancers will have a tough test opening night against Casa Grande, which had a successful 7-5 season in 2019 and welcomes back one of the better quarterbacks in the state in junior Angel Flores.
Last season, Flores put up more than 2,000 yards passing while collecting 15 touchdowns with only five interceptions.
This might be one of the best quarterback battles of the season.
