Salpointe No. 4 in Open Division; Pusch Ridge, Benson, Santa Cruz Ranked High

A few of the Southern Arizona schools that started their seasons in early October — eligible for their respective state tournaments — are ranked high in the first ratings released by the AIA today.

Salpointe (4-0) is No. 4 in the eight-team Open Division, which includes the top eight teams from Class 4A-6A eligible for the postseason. The Lancers, who are unbeaten despite a new coach (Eric Rogers) and an overhaul of talent from last season, are ranked No. 2 in the 5A rankings.

Only two more rankings will be released — next week and Nov. 24 — before the state playoffs begin Nov. 27.

The Lancers, who need one more game to qualify for the state tournament, are next scheduled to play at Mountain View on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Pusch Ridge (5-1) is No. 5 in the 3A with its regular season scheduled to come to a close Friday at home against Florence at 7 p.m.

Three Southern Arizona schools are ranked in the top 10 in 2A: No. 1 Benson (5-0), No. 2 Eloy Santa Cruz Valley (5-1) and No. 10 Willcox (3-1). Benson is slated to host Willcox on Friday at 7 p.m.

In 1A eight-man football, St. David (5-0) and San Manuel (3-1) begin their postseason Friday. St. David is scheduled to host Williams and San Manuel is slated to play at Mogollon in the first round of the 1A state tournament.
