ST. DAVID WINS 1A VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

St. David beat Anthem Prep 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21) to capture the 1A State Championship on Saturday afternoon at Coronado High School in Scottsdale. The championship was the ninth from Southern Arizona and the fourth for head coach Tylene Miller.

The nine titles are tops for Southern Arizona and Miller ties former St. David coach Orland Merrill with four championships. Legendary Willcox coach Bobby Nelson had five between 1979 and 1990. Former Sahuaro coach Pauline Jordan leads the Tucson area with three titles and she did that in 1974, 1975 and 1976.

CDO LOSES TOUGH BATTLE WITH ALA-QUEEN CREEK

American Leadership Academy – Queen Creek outlasted Canyon del Oro 3-2 in a back-and-forth battle that went beyond the distance. The deciding set in the 4A first round tilt held in Oro Valley Saturday night played out much like the rest of the match with the Dorados jumping out to 6-2 lead only to see the Patriots go on an 8-1 run to take control.

Up 10-7, thanks mostly to a couple of aces from Azure McOmber that seemingly broke the Dorado spirit, Katie Call found Alina Nunez and then a block from Abby Whatton tied things up again only to see the Patriots go back up 13-10. The Patriots went up 14-12 but Nunez turned the first Patriot match-point back with a stop at the net and then Call hit Whatton to hold ALA-QC back once again…
