During Kevin Sumlin‘s time at Arizona, the Wildcats went an underwhelming 9-20 and are now in the midst of the longest losing streak in program history at 12 games.
Friday night’s game against rival ASU was the final blow as Arizona suffered its worst loss to the Sun Devils, losing 70-7 in a historically horrendous performance. Late Saturday afternoon, the Arizona athletic department announced Sumlin’s firing, bringing an end to a disastrous coaching tenure.
In the middle of Friday’s game, former players took to Twitter, blasting the coaching staff and the program’s current state:
Congratulations #UofAFootball for turning in the worst performance in school history. Fitting that it should cap off the worst season in school history. I’m sorry coach Tomey for allowing this to happen to our legacy. #BearDown

While at Arizona, Sumlin went 0-3 versus rival ASU in losses that featured a blown 19-point lead and Friday night’s demolishing of the Wildcats.
Sumlin’s hire will go down as one of the worst coaching hires in program history, alongside Bob Weber 16-26 and John Mackovic 11-24, who had players revolt to remove him as head coach.
Former players have made it clear that it is time to bring in someone who has ties to the program and understands Arizona, and knows how to build from the ground up.
Leipold, Norvell, or Brennan. I want a proven program builder that knows what commitment and chemistry mean and how we can get @ArizonaFBall relevant again. #BearDown.

God is good! I DON’T want to hear about any interviews UNLESS the potential coach went to ARIZONA or has @ArizonaFBall ties! #BearDown

Now, only one thing is clear when it comes to Arizona football, whoever becomes the next head coach will have their hands full trying to rebuild a program that has hit a new low just six years removed from a Fiesta Bowl appearance.
